Halifax Story Slam

One night. True stories, as remembered.

Told live from memory only.

In the tradition of The Moth and the Vinyl Cafe’s Story Exchange we are hosting a live “Story Slam” in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries at the Halifax Central Library. Presenters will be selected to tell their own true story around a theme.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

Maya Angelou

Do you have a unique personal story to tell? This is your chance.

Simple rules.

The story must be yours, be true, as remembered, and have some level of stakes. It can be funny, sad, dramatic or exciting. Have all of these elements? Even better.

A few things this is not.

This is not stand-up comedy, not spoken word poetry nor a theatre performance but entertaining is ideal. No storytelling experience is required, just the desire to have your story heard.

We will work with you to refine your story to fit a specific timeframe and give you just enough support for you to step to the mic and share your story with the world.

Sound intriguing?

Send us your rough outline (one short paragraph or a one-minute voice message) of your true story. It does not need to be finished or polished but it should pique our interest to hear the full version.

Through a series of story development sessions we will work with selected presenters to prepare to tell their story in front of an audience without any prompts, scripts, notes or net, live and true as remembered.

Ready to take the leap?

Send us your story bones. Just a few lines or a voice memo not more than two-minutes long. Hook us into wanting to hear more. It doesn’t need to be fully worked out. That’s part of this process.

This event’s theme is “fear”.

However you interpret that and how it plays into your real story is what we are looking and listening for. Let us know that in your pitch.

Tell us the actual story – not what it’s about or what it might be. Give us a sense of your story arc and how your story changed you.

Cliffhangers will not be considered (i.e. “and so begins the story of the greatest adventure of my life”). Go on! Tell us about the adventure! Don’t leave us hanging, because we won’t call you back.
